Unique data accounts for 78% of AI citations, guides just 12%

Research by Search Engine Land shows that AI search engines favour unique data over generic how-to guides when citing sources.

A large-scale analysis of 150,000 web pages by Search Engine Land shows that AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini handle content very differently from traditional search engines. Whilst generic guides and ‘how-to’ articles formed the backbone of SEO for years, AI models rarely draw their answers from them.

A mere 12% of generic educational articles are cited in AI responses. By contrast, articles featuring unique data, fresh trend analyses and proprietary research findings secure a mention in no less than 78% of cases.

Why traditional SEO is no longer enough for AI

For years, traditional search engines rewarded long, comprehensive guides that explained a subject from A to Z. Generative AI models, however, already have that foundational knowledge at hand in their training data. When a user asks an AI assistant a question, the system does not look for a repetition of familiar definitions, but for fresh, verifiable facts and unique statistics.

The research reveals a clear divide between traditional SEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). Of the hundred top-performing pages in organic search results, almost half (49%) received no traffic at all from AI systems. Ranking well on Google therefore does not automatically mean AI models will notice or recommend your brand.

What does this mean for you?

To remain discoverable in AI search systems, you need to shift your focus from ‘writing the most complete guide’ to ‘becoming the most unique source’.

  • Share proprietary figures and insights: Publish customer surveys, internal statistics or practical case studies. AI systems strongly favour concrete data that cannot be found anywhere else.
  • Stop producing generic content: Scrap yet another basic guide and focus instead on investing in timely trend analyses and in-depth expert perspectives.
  • Make data easy to extract: Place your key findings and figures at the top of a paragraph in clear, factual sentences. This allows an AI model to easily digest the information and cite your website as a source.
