ChatGPT now favours primary sources over summary guides

A large-scale analysis reveals that ChatGPT is increasingly citing primary sources and original research, while summary articles are falling out of favour.

Over recent months, ChatGPT has fundamentally changed how it selects and cites sources. New data from SEO platform Ahrefs shows that the AI assistant is increasingly opting for primary sources and original data at the expense of general summaries and roundup blogs.

Primary data on the rise, summaries drop

Ahrefs analysed millions of ChatGPT responses, comparing the cited domains from March with those from September. The results reveal a clear shift. Official bodies, government organisations, medical databases, and hands-on product testers surged up the rankings. For instance, scientific platform PubMed climbed from 64th to 4th place on the list of most frequently cited websites in the US.

On the other hand, well-known ‘explainer’ and aggregator sites are rapidly losing ground. Websites such as WebMD (dropping from 18th to 79th position), Investopedia, and Britannica saw their citation share drop significantly or even fell out of the top 200 entirely. ChatGPT appears to actively penalise the rehashing of information, searching directly for the source where the information was originally published.

Why is ChatGPT making this pivot? The developers behind AI models want to reduce hallucinations and improve factual accuracy. A secondary source may contain errors or subjective interpretations, whereas a primary source provides hard facts, precise figures, and direct documentation.

What does this mean for your AI visibility?

For business owners and marketers, this changes the rules of GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). Simply rewriting existing topics or publishing ‘the ultimate guide’ will no longer cut it in AI search queries.

Want ChatGPT to cite your brand as a source? Adjust your content strategy accordingly:

  • Publish proprietary research and unique data: Conduct surveys, share original customer insights, or publish figures that cannot be found anywhere else.
  • Be the definitive source for your product: Ensure your product documentation, user manuals, and specifications are clear and directly accessible on your site.
  • Cite and link to official sources: Connect your own claims with primary sources to boost the credibility of your content.

By building on unique insights and factual authority, you ensure that AI models do not pass you by, but rather identify you as the definitive source.
